Why We Introduced Online Education in 2020
In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic led to the closure of schools and other institutions of learning across Uganda, St. Wesina Education Centre recognized the urgent need to ensure that learning did not come to a complete halt. The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Education and Sports, introduced a framework for the continuity of learning during the lockdown, with support from the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC). This national approach encouraged the use of different modes of learning, including self-study materials, radio lessons, television lessons, and online learning, so that learners could continue studying from home. In line with this national direction, St. Wesina Education Centre introduced online education and remote learning support as a practical response to the challenges caused by school closure. Our aim was to maintain academic engagement, reduce learning loss, and continue guiding our learners even when physical classrooms were no longer accessible. We understood that education had to continue in a safer and more flexible form, especially during a time of uncertainty for learners, parents, and teachers. This decision was also in harmony with the wider Ugandan education response, which emphasized that learning should continue through accessible home-based methods during the lockdown. Our online education initiative was designed not to replace the national framework, but to complement it. Where possible, we used digital communication and simple remote learning methods to share notes, assignments, guidance, and follow-up support with learners and parents. This helped us remain connected with our students, encourage continuity in study routines, and promote learner responsibility during a difficult period. The national MoES framework itself emphasized learner-centred home study, parental support, flexibility in delivery, and the use of internet-based options alongside radio, TV, and print materials. The experience of 2020 taught us an important lesson: education must be resilient, adaptive, and responsive to the realities of society. The introduction of online education at St. Wesina Education Centre therefore marked the beginning of a broader commitment to innovation in teaching and learning. What started as an emergency response during the COVID-19 lockdown became part of our long-term vision of preparing learners for a modern world in which digital skills, flexibility, and continuous access to knowledge are increasingly important. This reflects the wider Ugandan education sector’s move toward more flexible learning pathways and continued use of materials developed during the pandemic, even after schools reopened.
Our Journey
The journey of St. Wesina Education Centre is rooted in a strong desire to provide quality, holistic, and future-oriented education to learners in Uganda. From the beginning, our vision has been to build a learning institution that not only promotes academic excellence, but also nurtures discipline, character, creativity, innovation, and practical life skills.
Over time, our school has grown in purpose and direction, driven by the belief that every learner deserves an environment where they can discover their potential and prepare for a meaningful future. We have remained committed to creating a centre of learning that responds to the changing needs of society while staying focused on the core values of education, responsibility, and service.
A major turning point in our journey came in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted education across Uganda and schools were officially closed on 20 March 2020. In response, the Ministry of Education and Sports introduced a framework for continued learning through home-study materials, radio, television, and online support under the guidance of NCDC. In line with that national direction, St. Wesina Education Centre embraced online and remote learning approaches as part of our commitment to ensure that learning continued beyond the physical classroom. This period challenged us to think differently, innovate responsibly, and support learners in more flexible ways. What began as an emergency response during the lockdown became an important foundation for our broader educational vision in the digital age. [education.go.ug], [education.go.ug]
Since then, our journey has continued to be one of growth, resilience, and transformation. We have strengthened our commitment to learner-centred education, embraced innovation in teaching and learning, and continued to prepare learners not only for examinations, but also for life, leadership, and responsible citizenship.
Today, St. Wesina Education Centre stands as a symbol of hope, progress, and educational purpose. Our journey is still unfolding, and we remain dedicated to empowering learners with the knowledge, values, and skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
